One of my favorite things to do when I camp in my travel trailer is to use vintage camping accessories such as lanterns and stoves. I have a nice collection of them, some of which I have restored myself. My latest fun thing is trying to start a fire with primitive fire making tools such as flint and steel. Here is a picture of my fire making kit. I made the pouch out of deer skin and hod the wife do the bead work on it.A friend of mine who has a forge made me the striker that fits in a mini altoids tin. I made my own char cloth with the tin placing it in the fire until the material (old jean cloth) carbonized. Then I added a small flint to strike with the steel..I like to wear the pouch with the tin inside around my neck when camping. It takes some practice getting an ember to place inside my tinder bundle (think of a birds nest), but it works and its rewarding when it works.

That is so neat Tea. You are really creative. Did you cure and tan the deer hide yourself? The bead work is quite striking against the deerskin too.
Tres Chic!
