Mavs, I wanted to start a couple of threads in various categories, including this one but can't figure out how to start a thread.
I thought a good safe thread about politics would be: "Do you have friends with different political viewpoints from your own and if not would you be open to a friendship with someone whose views are different from yours?"
Can you either email me or post here and let me know how to post the thread mentioned above or post the above thread for me?

I find it difficult to understand how some of my friends think in especially who they vote/voted for this last election. I mean it just baffles me as to how they could have fell for such a load of crap.And now with everything that's gone on, said,tweeted ect they STILL believe the insanity of it all. Whats happened in the last two 1/2 years is so shocking its unbelievable, yet they don't or won't see whats plainly happening in front of them..the destruction of our democracy.I never want to hurt anyone's feelings but I just cannot fathom what world some people are living in when they can't see the obvious.

I agree with you completely T, I mean are so many people so blind and stupid? makes one wonder! however with that said remember the election was so manipulated and corrupt, but then it has been for decades as far as I am concerned voting should be done by the people and for the people, not decided by the electoral college "screw that" We the people should have final say in all matters or why would any of us waste our time at the polls. The WH belongs to us "the people" and we should say who occupies it! no foreign gov., no electoral college, no BS, simply "We the people of the USA."

The vast majority of my friends online and in real life have similar political views to myself, and I must admit I am quite passionate in my beliefs, especially as a woman living in the United States under the current administration. However, my 2 friends (1 online and 1 in real life) who voted for the current administration I care for both very much and I can only conclude that they are misled and have bought into false promises and fake news.They are not bigots which confounds me even further but very accepting of all people, and neither one is nasty or demeaning of my stance like so many on the opposite side of the fence. I can only hope that at some point they will see the light.
It's been a very tough almost 3 years since the last election and our country which was already seeing a surge in racism and homophobia has now become divided with such a large chasm separating the sides that sometimes I wonder if we can ever bridge the gap and repair the damage that has been done in those 3 years.. While I love this country dearly, I am horrified and dismayed by current events and I pray that the 2020 election will bring about a positive change.
It's not easy having even 2 friends with such different beliefs, but I know that in their cores, they are good people, and even good people make mistakes and bad decisions, so at the end of the day they are still my friends.

Last night I watched Bernie Sanders on the Jimmy Kimmel show. I know some see him as a 'firebrand', but to me, he talked a lot of sense.

Not sure whether I can voice my opinion here? is this topic just for American politics? I am Australian and like to think am fair minded and listen to all sides as with all political subjects everyone is entitled to their opinion and view. My big ask is why oh why can't we be told true facts, how many 'facts' told us are actually true. So many times politicians will promise to do this or that, get elected and what happens? Seems all around the western world there are many unhappy and divided and with a lot about half this way and half that way which makes it very difficult for a majority decision and so the unrest goes on.

Maybe I can be your token conservative here, although I really am a 1960 JFK/FDR liberal who has not moved with the times. (Back then, where I grew up (in Texas) we fought for the right of Blacks to use the 'White' restrooms. Now we're supposed to fight for the right of boys to use the girls restrooms. No thanks.)
Anyway, it's clear to me that the US is on the path to something very bad, from the point of view of both sides.
And there is a solution, that should please both sides, a win/win, although it's a radical one.
Our Founding Fathers [okay, I know they were all white male racist sexist heteronormalists, but just hang in there] had the idea 250 years ago:
" When in the course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them ..."
All kinds of practical problems, for sure. But, as we shake off the chains of empire and go into retirement from being the world's policeman, and watch China rise to Number One, the idea of a peaceful separation, while retaining a strong defensive military alliance and very close economic and cultural ties, will start to appear more and more desirable.
Or so I hope.

Lets be clear, no one is fighting for the rights of boys to use the girls restrooms or vice versa. In case someone needs a quick science lesson though here it is: trans are those born into the wrong gender of body. They do not want to peep over the stalls to see what the next person is doing, but surely you know that. And yes there are those who are merely claiming trans status for attention, but that does not take away from what a genuine trans person is suffering and I certainly don't think it's a subject to be mocked or ridiculed. "Nuff said!" You certainly did hit the nail on the head when you described our founding fathers. A bunch of middle aged white men who were indeed sexist, racist, and homophobic. (That also describes the majority of Republicans as well) Notice I am ignoring your terminology heteronormalist. The human race has evolved, or at least a good portion of us have, noting that there are exceptions such as Trump and his supporters. But to touch on your quote from the Declaration of Independence, I certainly don't agree that we should terminate our relationship with government which is exactly what that quote means. We also shouldn't just bow out and fade into the ether because we are tired and don't want to deal with the problems of the world today. We need to take what is broken and fix it, We should lead by example and endeavor to make the world a better place which means doing things like sticking by our allies such as the Kurds who fought beside us for 5 years against ISIS and lost 11,000 of their own instead of pulling out without so much as a cya later, leaving the door open for total genocide and then sending 14,000 of our own to guard oil in a country where we at best walk on eggshells for fear of being taken out by one of their regime. We need to remember our values and reward loyalty and friendship with loyalty and friendship and evil deeds and corruption with punishment such as long prison terms regardless of what position of power one might hold. Without a government and system of checks and balances there would be total chaos and rather than dumping it in the wastebasket lets fix what is broken as I stated before. We are already at risk of becoming an even more isolationist nation than we have been for the past century. We need to remain a viable and active part of the world and extend our humanitarianism to the rest of the world, not withdraw and say "lets leave the hard work to the next guy." We are better than that!
